History & Folklore

As you sweep along the grand tree-lined driveway, it is immediately clear you have arrived somewhere truly special. Pencoed House Estate has welcomed an extraordinary collection of residents through the centuries, including Members of Parliament, Sheriffs of the County, church ministers, prosperous farmers and descendants of the King of Glamorgan.

The Estate's beginnings are equally fascinating. Widely believed to have been established by Welsh notable Jevan ap David in the early fifteenth century, Pencoed remains one of Glamorgan's oldest privately occupied residences, with ancient stonework, Gothic architecture and centuries of stories woven into the character of the Estate.

Where centuries of history meet stories, secrets and a little Welsh legend.

CENTURIES OF CHARACTER

A Story Written in Stone

Pencoed's distinctive architecture hints at a past that stretches back more than six centuries. The pointed Gothic stone arch has led some to believe the Estate may once have begun life as a small monastery, while other accounts attribute much of the present house to later sixteenth-century construction.

Stories Beneath the Stones

History tells only part of Pencoed's story. Local folklore claims that the Estate was once home to King Arthur and Queen Guinevere, adding another layer of mystery to a place already rich in Welsh heritage.

Another legend tells of the Black Prince hiding his wife at Pencoed for four months during turbulent times, supposedly using secret tunnels linked to the Estate. Whether fact, folklore or something in between, these stories have become part of the character and intrigue that make Pencoed so distinctive.
